Look at outright WTI or Brent and you’d think things are merely tight. Look at the cost of getting a barrel from where it sits to where it’s needed, and you realize the oil market has quietly outsourced its crisis to the freight desk. And then look at who’s supposed to be managing the demand side of that crisis — the European Union — and you realize the deeper problem isn’t tanker rates at all. It’s that the entity meant to coordinate a continental response to an energy shock was never built to do that job in the first place.

Start with the physical picture, because it’s the part you can trade. European gas storage sits at 69.6% full heading into the last week of September, meaningfully behind every prior year on the same chart, with Germany at 56.6% and the Netherlands at 55.1% doing most of the damage to the average. Austria’s at 67.6%, Spain 73.4%, France close to 80%, Italy the overachiever at 85.5%. Nobody’s in crisis yet. But the cushion going into winter is thinner than usual, and thin cushions have a way of turning ordinary cold snaps into headline events. File this under “background variable that raises everyone’s hedging beta.”

The story with actual teeth is diesel. European gasoil futures closed last week at an all-time high, more than doubling since the start of 2026. The mechanism fits on a napkin: wars in Iran and Ukraine have hit export capacity across Russia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE simultaneously, refinery infrastructure has taken damage on top of that, and the Middle East — which supplied roughly 41% of Europe’s diesel imports in 2025 — has seen its exports to Europe roughly halve since March, down to around 800,000 bpd. A meaningful share of what Saudi Arabia does still manage to ship has to thread the Red Sea. There is essentially no idle refining capacity anywhere willing and able to backfill that gap on short notice. When the marginal barrel of diesel has no substitute, you don’t get a price move, you get a price event — and the crack spread reflects it: the US heating oil crack is at levels last seen in 2009. That’s not refiners having a good quarter. That’s the market telling you refining capacity itself, not crude, is now the scarce input.

I opened the terminal on September 15th expecting the usual Monday-morning noise, and instead found the desk chat had gone dead quiet — the kind of quiet that's usually reserved for margin calls, not market moves. Turned out to be both. Forties, one of the key physical benchmarks underpinning Brent, had jumped to 136 dollars a barrel. As recently as August 26th the same crude was trading around 89. Under three weeks, and the move is already past fifty percent, with the April high of 147 now uncomfortably close — practically one nervous weekend away. Somewhere on financial Twitter someone will call this "a rally," the way you'd describe a latte getting more expensive at the airport. It isn't that. This is a market that has stopped being able to locate barrels where it needs them right now, and is paying a premium for it that would have looked like a terminal typo a month ago.

Let's start with the mechanics, because without them the humor turns into hysteria, and we don't do hysteria here — we run positions, not nerves. Forties isn't some abstract index; it's a physical North Sea crude basket, one of the components of the BFOE grade against which dated Brent is assessed. When Forties spot detaches from the paper market by this much, it means exactly one thing: somebody physically cannot find barrels where they're needed today, and is willing to pay to teleport crude across space and time. Teleportation, unfortunately, remains unavailable — what's on offer instead is a halted Saudi East-West pipeline and ongoing tanker attacks that are making life miserable for anyone trying to move a cargo through the Strait of Hormuz.

Which brings us to the more interesting number: the curve. The six-month Brent calendar spread has blown through 20 dollars a barrel. For anyone who trades equities exclusively and gets their information from cable news, that figure means nothing, so let's spell it out, since that's the entire point of this column. Backwardation is when oil for immediate delivery is priced above oil delivered six months from now. In a boring, well-mannered contango world, the market tells you: relax, wait, there'll be plenty of oil, just pay a little for storage. A 20-dollar backwardation over six months is the market screaming in your face: I don't care what happens in six months, give me a barrel today, and I'll pay for it like a front-row seat at a Champions League final. This is no longer a geopolitical risk premium neatly stuck on top of the price like a "handle with care" sticker. It's a structural shortage of physical supply, right now, and the distinction matters: you can hedge a risk premium with an option. You cannot hedge a shortage of barrels — you can only survive it if you hold the cargo, and go bust if you don't.

Every few months someone sends me a link to a podcast or a Telegram transcript promising to explain, finally, how the dollar system ends, and every few months I sit down expecting to be annoyed and instead find myself nodding along for an hour, because the honest version of this story isn’t a collapse narrative at all — it’s a maturity mismatch.

Start with the thing nobody disputes: the dollar’s claim to be the world’s reserve currency was never really about the dollar. It was about the balance sheet behind it. Bretton Woods pegged the world to the dollar because, at the moment the ink dried, the United States accounted for something close to half of global output, ran the deepest and most liquid capital markets on earth, and had just watched every rival economy burn itself down twice in thirty years. That share of global GDP has been sliding for decades and now sits close to a fifth of the world total, and the reason the dollar’s exorbitant privilege has been able to outlast the arithmetic that justified it is the same reason a well-run corporation can coast for years after its core product goes stale: institutions have enormous inertia. Everyone in the building — the risk managers, the reserve managers, the pension funds, the correspondent banks — has built their entire operating model around one collateral, one clearing currency, one discount curve. Nobody wants to be the analyst who stands up in the reserve committee meeting and says the emperor’s currency is looking a little thin these days, because that analyst has just volunteered to rebuild the entire firm’s plumbing on his own dime, and institutions punish that kind of heroism far more reliably than they reward it. So the system limps on past its rational shelf life the way every legacy institution does, right up until a market — not a committee, not a treaty, an actual market — forces the repricing. That’s the part people miss when they imagine some tidy summit where the world agrees to switch currencies. Reserve currency transitions have never worked that way. Sterling didn’t get voted out; it got margin-called by two wars it couldn’t afford, financed on debt, at a moment when America simply had a better balance sheet sitting next to it. The historical average length of that kind of transition, dollar bulls take heart, is measured in decades, not quarters. But averages describe the smooth part of the curve, not the gap risk sitting at the far tenor, and gap risk is exactly what’s building now.

Here’s the frame I keep coming back to, because it’s the one that actually explains the data rather than just narrating a vibe: what’s underway is not a currency crisis in the sense of a run on a peg. It’s the terminal stage of a multi-decade credit cycle, and the reserve currency question is basically riding on top of it as a second-order effect. The postwar consumption model — American and European households buying more than they earned, financed by rolling debt forward, decade after decade — worked spectacularly as an engine of global growth because someone on the other side of that trade was delighted to supply it. That someone was China, and the trade was straightforward: the West consumed tomorrow’s income today, and China built the industrial base to fill the order book. It’s not a coincidence that the loudest complaints about “Chinese overcapacity” arrived exactly when the Western consumer ran out of runway to keep absorbing it. You can’t run a supply chain sized for infinite demand growth against a customer base that has quietly converted its future income into current spending and has nothing left to convert. That’s not overproduction in the sense of a factory manager miscounting orders. It’s the physical, structural residue of a credit cycle reaching its far end — the equivalent of a shipowner who kept extending his charter book against rates that assumed the boom never stopped, and then discovers the boom stopped roughly the moment he signed the last long-dated fixture.

I keep getting asked the same question by people who should know better, and it usually arrives dressed up as a paradox: how can the dollar be simultaneously the most cursed currency in the world, the one everyone is supposedly fleeing, the one the BRICS summit communiqués love to bury, and also the strongest it has been against a broad trade-weighted basket in twenty years, propped up by a Fed funds rate that is itself a monument to how badly Washington needs to keep foreigners interested in financing its deficit. Dedollarization and dollar strength are not supposed to coexist in the same sentence, and yet here we are, watching both happen at once, which tells you that whoever built the mental model people are using to think about this has confused two entirely different markets. One is the plumbing. The other is the currency. They rhyme, they are related, but they are not the same thing, and every time some macro tourist conflates them you get another confidently wrong Substack post explaining the imminent death of the greenback.

Let me deal with the plumbing question first because it is the one nobody actually understands, including, I suspect, most of the people running central banks. There is no committee holding the dollar up. I want to be extremely clear about this because the “someone is propping it up” framing gets repeated so often it has become load-bearing folklore. Central banks intervene in FX markets constantly and lose constantly, because the market, in aggregate, across every desk and fund and corporate treasury doing carry trades, is simply a bigger animal than any monetary authority. The Bank of Japan has run intervention after intervention over the decades — I remember the yen grinding toward 76 back when everyone thought that was the apocalypse, and the BoJ threw four separate interventions at it starting somewhere in the low 80s, and the yen calmly continued on its way regardless. Rate differentials, similarly, get cited by every textbook as the master variable in FX, and then you look at realized volatility in G10 currency pairs running ten, fifteen percent a year and you realize nobody trading real size is pricing off central bank policy rates as a primary signal. What actually drives FX in the modern era, and has for twenty-odd years now, is funding flow — which currency is cheap to borrow in, and whose banking system has enough spare capacity on its balance sheet to extend that funding for speculative purposes. It’s a liquidity and funding-cost story dressed up in a rate-differential costume, and macro generalists wandering into that market usually get eaten alive because they’re solving the wrong equation.

For four centuries, the story of the world economy was the story of European commodity arbitrage. The continent did not rise because it invented a better moral framework for commerce, nor because it discovered the secret of compound interest before anyone else. It rose because it solved a physical problem: how to extract resources from the periphery fast enough to fund innovation at the center, while dumping the social and industrial waste of that innovation back into the colonies. This was not a financial trick. It was a geographical and logistical feat, and understanding it is the only way to understand why Europe is finished, and what comes next.

You have capital, you have labor, you mix them with Protestant ethics or ethnic folklore about financiers, and out pops the Industrial Revolution. This is a fairy tale. If you look at the actual material flows of the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, what you see is a pump. Raw materials—cotton, timber, sugar, tobacco, minerals—flowed into European ports. Finished goods—textiles, weapons, refined metals—flowed out. But the crucial flow, the one that made the system sustainable at a speed no previous civilization had managed, was the flow of obsolescence. When a new technology emerged in Lancashire, the old technology did not die there. It was shipped to the periphery, where it continued operating at lower margins, with lower wages, and without the political power to resist the transition. The social cost of progress was not paid in Manchester. It was paid in Calcutta.

This is the element that pure economic theory misses. In a closed system, technological progress creates crisis. The spinning jenny destroys the livelihood of hand-spinners. They riot, they organize, they demand protection. The state faces a choice: slow down innovation or face instability. Europe did not solve this dilemma through superior institutions. It solved it through expansion. The colonial system created an externality zone where European capital could park its obsolete assets while deploying fresh capital at home. A mill in Birmingham could be modernized because the old mill equipment was sold to Egypt or India, where it operated for another generation, not profitably enough to attract new investment, but not unprofitably enough to shut down immediately. The crises of capitalism were not overcome; they were geographically displaced. This is why the speed of European development was artificial, dependent on the continuous opening of new peripheries, and why the moment that expansion stopped, the underlying contradictions returned.

The geography of Europe made this possible in a way that no other region could replicate. The continent is a fractal coastline of peninsulas and micro-climates, packed into a small space. Within a few hundred kilometers, you move from Mediterranean olive groves to North Sea fisheries, from Atlantic timber to Alpine minerals. Before the early modern period, this meant little; agricultural technology was too crude to exploit the differences fully. But as shipping and metallurgy improved, these micro-regions began to specialize. One valley made wool. The next made wine. A coastal city built ships. An inland city forged cannon. They were close enough to trade cheaply, yet distinct enough to resist total homogenization. This was not a market in the abstract sense. It was a physical network of commodity flows, and the constant competition between these regions meant that no single technological standard could dominate for long. If Flanders lagged in dyeing techniques, Italian cities took the lead. If Venice grew complacent in shipbuilding, the Dutch surpassed them. The commodity map of Europe was a war map, and the prize was control over the next logistical bottleneck.

A friend of mine who follows the Middle East more closely than I follow my own margin calls sent me a voice note the other night, half exhausted, half delighted with himself, the way people get when they’ve been proven right about something nobody wanted to hear. He’d just landed in Moscow after two sleepless nights near his dacha (summer house), which now has an air-defense battery parked next to it — the kind of detail that used to sound like satire and now just sounds like Tuesday. He wanted to talk about the funeral. Millions of mourners, a number so large it apparently broke a record set by the previous funeral of the same institutional office, and a crowd whose mood toward Washington and Tel Aviv was, in his words, not exactly diplomatically calibrated. But he didn’t really want to talk about the funeral. He wanted to talk about something else, a story spoken in barrels instead of tears.

Here is the shape of it, stripped of the theatrics. Sometime this spring, under pressure that had less to do with genuine appetite for peace than with the simple fact that everyone’s inventories needed refilling, a memorandum got signed. Call it Versailles with tankers instead of reparations. The framing, delivered by the Vice President with a straight face, was that buying time was itself the strategic objective — global inventories were thin, prices were doing things nobody’s P&L wanted to explain to a risk committee, and a pause, any pause, would let the system exhale. Iran, for its part, sold roughly eighty million tons of crude in the run-up, took delivery of a chunk of it back in physical cash rather than paper promises, restocked reserves through channels that included, amusingly, rail interconnects with Pakistan they mostly didn’t bother using, and generally played the compliant, deal-making counterparty. The first clause of that memorandum — and I want you to sit with this, because it’s the entire ballgame — assigned Iran, and only Iran, responsibility for the security and functioning of transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Not the Gulf monarchies. Not the U.S. Navy. Iran.

You’d think a clause like that would be sacred. It lasted about as long as it takes to say “sacred” out loud. Within days the same administration that signed it was quietly organizing a parallel shipping corridor along the Omani coast — the southern side of the strait — explicitly outside the lane Iran had just been handed sole custodial responsibility for. If you know anything about how territorial optionality gets priced, you’ll recognize what happened next as inevitable rather than surprising: you don’t hand a counterparty exclusive rights to a chokepoint and then unilaterally carve out a competing route through the same chokepoint without that counterparty reading it as a breach. Iran read it as a breach. Then, on the eighth and ninth of the month, they stopped warning and started firing anti-ship missiles — not the drone harassment everyone had priced in as background noise, actual guided ordnance — and put five vessels on the seabed or close to it in a single day. Four tankers, one dry bulk carrier. The convoy the U.S. had organized, largely composed of Emirati, Qatari, and Saudi tonnage, got vaporized as a demonstration rather than degraded as a nuisance.

What I find genuinely elegant about the whole sequence, in the way you find a well-constructed options strategy elegant even when it’s the strategy that’s about to take your money, is the logic of timing. Iran let two weeks of stated troop withdrawal orders sit on the books, let the world watch American forces notionally drawing down from the region after whatever earlier round of strikes had already happened, and then, four days before the funeral crowds even finished dispersing, watched Washington quietly reverse that withdrawal order and redeploy everything right back. Meanwhile Iranian strikes were clearing out every adjacent U.S. and allied basing option — Jordan included — funnelling all that redeployed hardware into a single geographic basket: Israel. If you’re running the Iranian side of this and your objective is to manufacture a clean casus belli against Israel itself, you don’t want American assets scattered across six bases. You want them concentrated in exactly one place, so that when you eventually strike, you get to claim you were striking a legitimate military target being used to stage attacks against you, and Israel eats the retaliation instead of hiding behind extraterritorial ambiguity. It is, and I don’t say this lightly, a beautifully constructed trap, and the fact that Israel’s own government reportedly told Washington not to bother redeploying aircraft to Ben Gurion tells you the Israelis saw the same trap and didn’t love being the designated collateral.

Most writing about European energy is either moral or bureaucratic. This piece will try to be neither. It will treat Europe’s current position the way a portfolio manager would treat a client’s book: as a set of exposures, correlations, distributions and floors. The pictures are borrowed from a very clean thread on correlated bets. The story they tell about European gas, industry, defence financing and the 2027 Russian LNG cliff is, unfortunately, its own.

The comforting curve nobody actually lives on

Every glossy strategy document from Brussels, London and half the capitals in between reads as though Europe is walking up the blue line. Add more LNG suppliers, more terminals, more storage mandates, more sanction packages, more defence funds, more procurement schemes, more coordination mechanisms with hopeful acronyms, and the probability of a good outcome asymptotes toward one. Risk becomes a management problem. Independence becomes a project plan.

The awkward truth is that Europe is on the orange line. Its “diversified” portfolio is stuffed with names that all depend on the same underlying variable: the cost, availability and volatility of energy inputs into a mature, indebted, aging, high-cost economic bloc that is simultaneously trying to fund war, rearmament, transition and social peace. You can add as many instruments as you like. The good-year probability hits a ceiling. That ceiling is your correlation. Every additional fund only paints it in a nicer colour.

Europe’s return distribution stopped being a bell curve

Pre-2022, European industry lived under something close to a narrow bell curve. Small movements around a stable mean. Cheap, boring, reliable inputs. Cheap, boring, reliable earnings. The last political generation was built on that boredom, even though nobody labelled it that way. Cheap gas underwrote German chemicals, Italian ceramics, French metals, Dutch fertilisers, Belgian refining and Spanish electricity. Cheap gas also underwrote the welfare state, the moral vocabulary and the diplomatic self-image. Boredom, in energy terms, is a subsidy.

That distribution is gone. What replaced it is much closer to the rectangle above: a wide band of possible outcomes, roughly uniform in probability, stretching from clearly damaging on the left to comfortably profitable on the right. The mean did not disappear. It merely stopped being informative. What matters now is the width of the box.

Any serious commodity analyst would draw European power prices, TTF forward curves and industrial margins as exactly this kind of wide flat distribution. Anything narrower would be dishonest. The width itself is the story.

The narrow strip that keeps industry alive

Once you accept the rectangle, the useful question is no longer “what is the expected outcome?” It is: how much of the distribution is genuinely acceptable?

For European heavy industry, the acceptable band is narrower than the political conversation admits. Chemicals, fertilisers, aluminium, steel, glass, ceramics and paper do not need windfall energy. They need input costs sitting somewhere in the polite middle of the box. Call that strip R₁ to R₂. Below R₁, plants get idled, capex slips, headcount goes to Texas, and the supplier ecosystem quietly disassembles. Above R₂, upstream producers celebrate, but downstream users pass the pain to households and governments, at which point subsidy politics eats the surplus.

The orange strip in the drawing is that band. In this stylised world, the probability of landing in it is only 25%. Windfall is not rescue. Cheap gas is no longer available. The acceptable region is small, and most of the distribution is uncomfortable.

This is why record Russian LNG cargoes into the EU in H1 2026 — 136 cargoes, about 9.97 million tonnes, up 16% year-on-year, with more than 97% of Yamal deliveries going to EU ports, worth roughly €5.96bn — are not an ideological failure. They are a portfolio behaviour. When a wide box has a narrow acceptable strip, buyers rationally lift cheaper inventory while they legally can. Long-term Russian LNG contracts remain legal until 1 January 2027. In portfolio language, that is a call option with a hard expiry, and options with hard expiries always attract front-loading, no matter what the press release says.

There is a confusion that sits at the centre of how most people think about markets, and it is not the usual confusion between correlation and causation, or between risk and uncertainty. It is more foundational than that. It is a confusion between two entirely different mathematical properties that happen to point in the same direction — and that coincidence has been expensive for a lot of people. The two properties are expected drift and probabilistic drift. They sound identical. They are not. Disentangling them is not an academic exercise. It changes how you position, what you hedge, and whether you survive the kind of environment we are currently inside.

Financial mathematics runs, almost entirely, on two assumptions. The first is the efficient market hypothesis — not in the naive form that markets are always correct, but in the technically relevant sense that prices are arbitrage-free. If they were not, you would not do financial mathematics at all. You would simply find the arbitrage and extract it until it disappeared. The entire apparatus of options pricing, forward curves, and risk-neutral valuation depends on this single condition: that you cannot manufacture riskless profit from price discrepancies. Accept that, and prices today become the discounted expected value of prices tomorrow. That is what the efficient market hypothesis actually delivers, mathematically speaking. The second assumption is the Markov property, which applies to Brownian motion, geometric Brownian motion, Black-Scholes, and virtually every stochastic differential equation model used in practice. What it says, precisely, is that the process is memoryless. The current price already encodes the full history of how it got there. The trajectory is irrelevant. What matters is where you are now, not where you have been. This is convenient, because it means you can treat every moment as a fresh start. It is also unsettling, because it means that reversions to historical levels carry no mathematical guarantee. Layer on the law of large numbers and you reach the comfortable conclusion: over long horizons, markets drift upward by approximately the risk-free rate. Positive drift. The theoretical underpinning for passive investing, for pension fund actuarial assumptions, for every financial product built around the idea that time in the market beats timing the market. All of that is true. And none of it helps you over the next 45 days.

Every civilisation gets the metaphor it deserves. Rome had bread and circuses. Britain had tea and opium. America, in the second week of June 2026, has a seventy-nine-year-old real estate developer posting on social media at 2 a.m. that he has, for the thirty-ninth time, achieved peace in the Middle East — this time for real, pinky promise — while fifty Tomahawk cruise missiles’ worth of annual production smoulders in the Iranian desert and the Strait of Hormuz remains as navigable as a bathtub full of mines. The Art of the Deal, ladies and gentlemen, has become the Art of the Kneel. And the kneeling, it turns out, is remarkably well distributed across the entire Western alliance.

Let us begin where all serious financial analysis must begin: with a body of water that most people cannot find on a map but through which roughly twenty per cent of the world’s oil supply is supposed to flow. The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed for over two months now, which, according to the models that serious people at serious institutions built before the shooting started, should have pushed Brent crude to two hundred dollars a barrel. It has not. Physical Brent touched a hundred and fifty, shrugged, and settled into the kind of uneasy equilibrium that traders describe as “reluctant calm” and normal people describe as “waiting for the other shoe to drop while standing in a shoe factory.” The reason oil has not hit the apocalyptic forecasts is not that supply is adequate. It is that the world’s largest buyer decided to take its ball and go home. China slashed crude imports from a typical eleven million barrels per day to somewhere around six or seven — a reduction so dramatic that it would have been front-page news in any other month, but in June 2026 it barely made the commodities section because everything else was also on fire, metaphorically and in several cases literally. Beijing achieved this partly by squeezing the margins of its independent “teapot” refineries — those wonderfully chaotic small-scale operators that had spent years hoovering up discounted Iranian and Russian crude like a university student at an all-you-can-eat buffet — and partly because the American naval blockade, while about as watertight as a colander, managed to divert half a million barrels per day of Iranian crude that Chinese buyers had been counting on. The teapots lost their cheap feedstock, Beijing regulated their retail prices into unprofitability, and suddenly the world’s most voracious oil consumer was on a diet. Not because it wanted to lose weight, mind you, but because it was calculating exactly how much pain everyone else would feel first.

The pain, for those keeping score, is distributed as follows. Roughly a hundred million barrels of Russian oil and two hundred million barrels of Iranian oil are currently floating around the world’s oceans on tankers, unsold, undelivered, and accumulating carrying costs that would make a London landlord wince. Strategic petroleum reserves in every major consuming nation except China — whose reserves are, naturally, the only ones not being drawn down, because Beijing plays chess while everyone else plays whack-a-mole — are approaching what energy analysts call “operational minimums.” This is a polite way of saying “the level below which your refineries start running dry and your constituents start running angry.” The American Strategic Petroleum Reserve sits at approximately 350 million barrels. At current drawdown rates of ten to twenty million barrels per month, the maths become what economists call “challenging” and what normal people call “oh no” sometime around the fourth quarter. Just in time for the holidays. Happy Thanksgiving, here is your rationed diesel. And speaking of things America is running out of, let us discuss the Tomahawk cruise missile, because the Tomahawk is now doing double duty as both a weapon of war and a metaphor for imperial overstretch. The United States produces roughly ninety Tomahawks per year. The Pentagon currently procures even fewer — around fifty-six, because why would you buy the full production run of your primary standoff weapon when you could instead spend the money on a conceptual rendering of a laser-equipped battleship named after the president? In a single night’s strike against Iran in early June, approximately fifty Tomahawks were launched. That is half a year’s production, gone before breakfast. Over the broader campaign, more than a thousand have been expended. The replenishment timeline is not months. It is years. Plural. And this is the country that is simultaneously supposed to be deterring China, backstopping Europe, and maintaining global maritime security. With what, one is tempted to ask. Harsh language?

The MQ-9 Reaper drone completes the picture of an empire running on fumes and institutional inertia. Iran has shot down more than thirty of them. Total American inventory: roughly a hundred and twenty airframes. Production line: closed. The pioneers of drone warfare, begging their allies to return their hand-me-downs. Somewhere, a Chinese defence planner is laughing so hard his tea is coming out of his nose. But wait, you say. Surely Europe will fill the gap. Surely the eight hundred billion euro defence package will produce results. And surely it will, in the same way that ordering a pizza produces results: eventually, partially, and with a significant portion of the total cost absorbed by the delivery infrastructure rather than the product itself. Of that headline figure, approximately a hundred and eighty-five billion euros is actually reaching military-industrial production. The Franco-German next-generation fighter programme, which was supposed to produce a European answer to the F-35, was this week officially cancelled after a decade of development, presumably because the two countries could not agree on which language the cockpit warnings should beep in. Europe will instead continue flying fourth-generation aircraft and, in the ultimate act of strategic self-abasement, buy more American jets. Or Swedish Gripens. Even Canada is considering Gripens now, which tells you everything you need to know about the state of the transatlantic defence-industrial relationship: when Canada starts shopping Swedish, the special relationship is in the intensive care unit and the priest has been called.

There is a particular kind of conviction that only becomes visible once it disappears, the way you only notice the bid was holding up the entire tape once it gets pulled and the market, with its usual lack of sentimentality, remembers gravity. Not the theoretical variety of gravity, the one that sits comfortably in equations and schoolbooks, but the practical form — the absence of support, the hollowing out underneath your position, the quiet realisation that what looked like a structure was, in fact, just size that someone could choose to remove. A few years ago we believed in the forward movement. Not believed in the sense of having examined it — there was no due diligence, no attempt to falsify it — but believed it the way one accepts a baseline invariant. It existed, therefore it would continue to exist. Freedom, equality, fraternity, democracy, the steady broadening of all the good things — it was not presented as an argument, because arguments can be lost, but as a condition, something more akin to weather than policy. You did not take a position on it. You were positioned by it. There was an institute, one of the old ones still formally attached to the Academy of Sciences, where a colleague went to inquire about a reissue of Aristotle. He was told, without irony and without hesitation, that Russian philosophy does not exist. There is philosophy, translated into Russian, and one may interpret it, but not extend it. The category itself had been foreclosed. No decree was issued. No prohibition formally declared. It had simply become impossible to think otherwise. That is what real hegemony looks like from the inside. It does not argue with you. It does not need to, because argument requires distance and there is none. It is not a participant in the system. It is the system. Everything else acquires a relationship to it. Nothing exists independently enough to contradict it. If one insists on translating it into trading language, it is the risk-free rate — not something you hedge, not even something you particularly notice, but the thing off which everything else is priced. You build positions against it. You manage exposure relative to it. But you do not, under any normal construction, take the other side of it, because there is no other side.

To describe what happens when such a structure begins to decay, the cleanest frame is not economic or political, because both of those assume actors and choices, and agency is precisely what was absent. The appropriate frame is mythological, because mythology is where humans record the behaviour of forces before they develop the language to explain them. Greek mythology, in its unabridged form — Hesiod, not Kun, the actual source material rather than the sanitised version handed to children alongside their multiplication tables — is not a pleasant collection of stories about vaguely irresponsible gods. It is a sequence. And the sequence is not decorative, it is the entire point. First comes the pre-Olympian world: Chaos, Gaia, Tartarus, Nyx, Esebus. These are not deities in the sense anyone would later understand the word. They are not thinking beings. They have no preferences, no moods, no narrative arcs. They are forces, стихи́и, underlying conditions of existence that precede all differentiation. They are not good or evil because they possess no intent. They are not predictable because they have no agency. The ocean does not negotiate. It does not punish and it does not spare. It simply is, and you either learn to exist within it or you do not. You cannot model such things. There is no probability distribution for Chaos. There is no expected value attached to Nyx. You do not speculate on them. You endure them.

Then comes the transition, and this is the part that matters most. As civilisation develops, as man accumulates just enough surplus to begin thinking rather than merely surviving, something subtle but decisive occurs. The undifferentiated forces begin to fracture. They acquire shape, identity, narrative. The chthonic mass splits — anthropomorphic gods on one side, zoomorphic monsters on the other. The Titanomachy plays out, the Olympians arrive, and in the process of their becoming gods something fundamental changes: the forces become attributes. Zeus is no longer the lightning itself. He holds the lightning. It is an instrument, a thing he throws by his own decision. And once something is an instrument, it implies a hand, and a hand implies choice, and choice implies an agent who can be understood, predicted, bargained with. This is the whole move. The thing that was once terrifying becomes merely formidable, which is to say it becomes legible. You can model an agent. You can form expectations. You can construct the first crude relationships. You cannot do any of this with a стихи́я. The parallel to financial modelling is not accidental, because modelling is exactly the act of turning a force into something with parameters. Before 1987, there was a collective delusion in the options market — a genuinely touching one, in retrospect — that volatility was constant. The Black-Scholes model said so, the formulas were elegant, and so everyone priced everything as though the world were a smooth lognormal distribution stretching gently to the right. It went really well until the crash, which demonstrated that the tails were not where the model said they were, that downside risk was fatter and uglier than any Gaussian had room for, and that the assumption of constancy was not a simplification but a fantasy. After that, every option acquired its own implied volatility, and the flat line became a surface — strike on one axis, expiry on the other, and the height of the thing telling you just how wrong the old model was at each point. The gods, as it were, had differentiated. The single force had become a landscape of individual attributes, each one legible, each one carrying its own local information about how the market actually expected the world to behave. You will always a conversation about China where someone who admits they once treated China the way other people collect stamps. Rice paper and ink. Tea bought in thimbles and drunk by the bucket. An annual pilgrimage to Shanghai every May to argue with plantation owners over the new Longjing harvest, the seller opening at ten times the market price, the buyer brandishing photographs of the price tags from the Yuan market, and then the long ritual haggle until both sides arrive at something they can live with — which, if you have ever priced anything against a counterparty who would rather not sleep than be cheated, is a negotiation you recognise in your bones. That was the exotic China: elite, eccentric, the property of a few obsessives the rest of the country considered mildly unwell. The thesis worth lifting out of the conversation is that this China is gone, and almost nobody in the West has marked the position to market. China stopped being an exotic asset and became a pervasive one. It is no longer a curiosity you travel to acquire; it is ambient. A man who buys a Haval and finds it drives perfectly well has just been told, more persuasively than any propaganda channel could manage, that the country which supposedly makes plastic rubbish has quietly overtaken him. The material fact does the work. China stopped selling a story and started shipping the conclusion.

The cost of misreading this is not aesthetic, it is analytical, and it begins with the single most useful thing a foreigner can learn about the country, which is that the word Zhongguo — the Middle Kingdom — contains no ethnonym. There is no equivalent of asking a man what he is and being told “I am Chinese” the way an American says American or a Russian says Russian. Ask a citizen of the Middle Kingdom what he is and he tells you where he is from: Shanghainese, Beijingese, Cantonese, in words so different they barely rhyme. A Mongol can claim the centre with a straight face. So can a Uyghur. Even Han is not an ethnicity in the sense the term implies; it is the name of a dynasty, the way a man in Guangzhou will tell you he is Tang, a person of the Tang house, naming a state structure rather than a bloodline. The nearest historical analogues are not nation-states at all. They are the European Union — if the EU had an army and a single administrative language — or the Roman Empire, with its provinces and its legions and its capital, granting each province a measure of autonomy in tax and in custom while binding them under one script and one centre. Egypt was a Roman province and did not speak an Indo-European language; that did not make it less Roman. China is a continent wearing the costume of a country, and every Western model that begins “China, a nation of 1.4 billion, wants…” has already mispriced the underlying. You cannot speak to a continent the way you speak to a country.

Time of death: somewhere between when a Chinese state-media correspondent, with the kind of smile you reserve for ex-spouses at funerals, asked Yuri Ushakov on camera what had replaced the Spirit of Anchorage — was it now the Spirit of Beijing? — and the moment Ushakov, visibly performing surgery on his own face, replied that he had never said anything about a Spirit of Anchorage in the first place. A man, in other words, denying the existence of a ghost while standing in the room where it died. Beautiful work. Stanislavski would have applauded. The thing that came out of Tianjin was not a communiqué in the dull post-Cold-War sense, the kind you skim for the word “concern” and then file under “billable.” It was a nuclear cocktail of language that, if you read it carefully, looks like a declaration of intent. Indivisible security. New strategic security architecture. Global governance. Opposition to the formation of military blocs. A pointed nod to the Thucydides Trap, which is the kind of reference you only deploy when you have already finished deciding which side of it you are on. They called the Americans a dying hegemon, more or less in those words, and then suggested that maybe, just maybe, states should stop being told how to live by other states. This is presented as multipolarity. It is, in fact, the polite version of “we two have decided, and the rest of you can read about it in the morning paper.” Trump and Xi did not jointly mug Putin in Anchorage; Xi and Putin jointly took Trump’s lunch in Tianjin, and Witkoff and Kushner — your favorite proximity-merchants — were promptly dispatched to Moscow to explain to the Kremlin chess club, in person, that the freelance career of certain intermediaries had reached a natural endpoint.

Now, the Spirit of Anchorage had served a particular purpose. It had bought the West time. While someone in Moscow was busy not finishing off the Ukrainian energy system at the pace they had been finishing it off a few weeks earlier — out of some sentimental commitment to not spoiling the mood at the talks — the other side of the table found a critical pressure point on the Russian economy and started squeezing. Drone strikes on refineries, on the shadow fleet, on the bits of infrastructure that turn barrels into bid–offer. The sort of campaign that a person sitting in front of a wallboard understands intuitively: you do not need to hedge every basis, you just need to put a credible threat on the one your counterparty cannot afford to lose. That was the West’s discovery. Cheap drones, expensive infrastructure, asymmetric payoff. The kind of trade structure a vol desk would write home about. And it worked, in the sense that for the first time in this war, the Kremlin started displaying body language that was not pure stone-faced kayfabe. Not capitulation, but recognition — which, in the language of options, is what happens when realized vol finally meets implied.

What Tianjin did, mechanically, was take that pressure point and announce that it will be closed. Not by negotiation. Not by a frowny eyebrow. By what the speaker on the original transcript, with characteristic Soviet-mechanical precision, called Кирзач — the kirza boot — landing squarely between the two legs of Trump’s wishbone stance. One foot in Ukraine, one foot in the Middle East, and a soft middle that the boot is, allegedly, about to find. The thesis, stripped of the smoking-room theatrics, is straightforward: Russia has been informed, by whomever one gets informed by in these structures, that escalation discipline has been outsourced for long enough, that the ladder of escalation is now to be climbed, and that the rung in question is one most Western capitals had quietly stopped believing in. A single tactical nuclear demonstration, somewhere in the Baltics. Not Kiev, not Lvov — striking Ukraine with that instrument would prove nothing the West needs to know. The point of the demonstration would not be to win a battle but to retire an institution, namely Article 5 of NATO, by demonstrating, in real time and in front of cameras, that the institution does not produce the response it advertises on the tin. The argument runs: hit Riga, hit Tallinn, hit a place with low population density and high symbolic charge, sit back, and wait. If the response is the kind of strongly worded statement Mr. Rutte has been workshopping this week, the alliance is over. If the response is genuine, kinetic and reciprocal — well, then a much larger conversation begins, but the people in charge of the boot are, in this telling, betting the entire chip stack that it does not.

Four hundred years of capitalist expansion have terminated not because anyone willed it but because the arithmetic ran out. Every consumer in Africa is now counted on someone’s balance sheet, every reserve in the ground is booked against someone’s equity, and the marginal frontier that financed each successive cycle of Western accumulation has closed. Pax Americana, like Pax Britannica before it, is dismantling on schedule, and the question is not whether but how, and who picks up the pieces. The candidate hegemon is China, and the American response, building through both administrations of the past decade, has been to ensure China inherits something unusable. Hence the strategic logic of immiserating the Eastern Hemisphere before withdrawing from it: if the prize is poisoned, the rival cannot consume it. Trojan war dynamics, in the original sense — even the victor loses. The problem with the strategy, increasingly visible across the past two quarters, is that the prize has poisoned the poisoner first.

Before working through the topology, a discipline note that frames everything that follows. The empirical structure of equity markets is negatively skewed — the big outlier moves cluster on the downside, the recoveries arrive in series of smaller upward increments rather than mirror-image bounces, and any positioning that does not respect this asymmetry will eventually get carried out on a gurney. The SnP500 drop of 1000 points do not recover by a single 1000 point rally; they recover by a sequence of 150 and 200 and 250-point sessions over the following weeks. That is the default texture of the underlying. Now layer on a macro thesis in which the United States is deliberately demolishing the Eastern Hemisphere’s hydrocarbon infrastructure, the Chinese industrial settlement loses its energy foundation, and the dollar system goes through accumulated friction toward eventual reorganisation. Every leg of that thesis has the same skew profile as the index it sits inside — long stretches of grind followed by discontinuous downside, recoveries that look orderly only in hindsight. Position sizing has to reflect that. Premium selling against the thesis is not the same trade as outright directional exposure to the thesis, and the difference is what survives the disorderly version.

The deeper frame, which I want to install before the commodity arithmetic, comes from Everett Rogers’ diffusion of innovations work. The diffusion literature distinguishes between innovations whose adoption produces sequential interdependence — each adopter benefits later adopters but not earlier ones — and interactive innovations with reciprocal interdependence, where late adopters and discontinuers feed back into the utility calculation of earlier adopters. The dollar reserve system is the canonical interactive innovation, and it has the diffusion profile to match: a slow build to critical mass over the post-Bretton-Woods decades, a self-sustaining plateau as network externalities locked in correspondent banking, and a discontinuance dynamic that runs in reverse — once enough nodes defect, the cost-benefit for remaining nodes deteriorates because the remaining users bear higher friction at smaller scale. Rogers’ point, drawn from work on fax adoption and early e-mail, is that the same network forces that produce explosive takeoff also produce explosive abandonment, and that critical-mass thresholds for discontinuance are typically lower than the thresholds for adoption because peer evaluation of failure spreads faster than peer evaluation of success. The dollar is not at a discontinuance threshold yet. It is in the early phase of friction accumulation that, in the diffusion model, precedes the threshold. The trade is to recognise the structure of the process, not to bet on the timing of the inflection.

The mechanics of the macro setup run through hydrocarbons, and the arithmetic has moved against the planners in a way that has not yet been priced. China imports roughly half a trillion dollars of oil and gas annually. Japan and South Korea combined import another half trillion. That trillion-dollar annual outflow is the price of admission to industrial modernity in non-resource-endowed Asia, and the geographic chokepoint through which a significant share of that flow physically passes is the Strait of Hormuz. The destruction or prolonged disruption of Gulf production does not merely raise the marginal barrel — it removes a category of barrel from the supply stack. The pre-war consensus heading into the first half of 2026 was a 3 million barrel per day supply surplus. The actual print, post-Iran disruption, is a deficit on the order of 10-11 million barrels per day. That is a 13-14 million barrel swing in the global balance, against an inelastic short-horizon supply curve, partially absorbed by strategic petroleum reserves and commercial inventory that are now visibly exhausted. The jet fuel inventory situation in Europe is the canary — fuel protests have appeared in Ireland, supply distress in Australia, refining margins on middle distillates have decoupled from anything the curve was pricing six months ago. The substitution doesn’t exist at scale on a seven-to-ten year horizon, because the upstream investment cycle does not permit it, and because the alternative producers — US shale, Brazilian deepwater, Guyana, Venezuela once stabilised — are concentrated in the Western Hemisphere.

There is a particular kind of historical violence that does not announce itself with armies or fire, and Europe is currently inside one. The continent is sleepwalking through what future economic historians will almost certainly mark as the opening of a long arc of decline, and the strange thing is that the moment of inflection has already happened — it happened in 2008 — but the patient still believes the cancer is in remission because the cortisone is doing its theatrical work. Equity prices in Frankfurt are fine. Greek government bonds trade at yields that would have seemed fantastical a decade ago. Spreads are tight. Distressed debt funds in Athens buy non-performing loans at five cents on the euro and exit at fifty, and the European Central Bank's balance sheet stands behind the entire arrangement like a slightly embarrassed parent at a children's party. None of this is recovery. It is the financial equivalent of vital signs on a body whose tissues are quietly necrotising, and once you understand that the patient is dying you can begin to see why the political symptoms — the censorship, the warmongering, the trade deals signed at Trump's golf courses, the institutional contempt for democratic preference — are not aberrations but functional adaptations to a structure that no longer works and whose managers have no intention of admitting it. The structural part of this story is roughly Kaldorian. The psychological part, which is the part most analysts skip past, was diagnosed with uncomfortable precision by Gustave Le Bon in 1895, and it is the missing piece that explains why the structural diagnosis cannot be acted on by the people charged with acting on it. And — this is the observation I want to develop because nobody seems to make it cleanly — the same psychological mechanism is operating on the Russian side of the war, in mirror image, with the result that the conflict in Ukraine is now being prosecuted by two ruling classes who both depend on its continuation for reasons that have very little to do with the stated objectives of either.

The story has to begin in 2008 because everything else is downstream. When Wall Street collapsed and dragged the French and German banking systems behind it, Europe faced exactly the choice that Sweden had faced in 1992 and answered the opposite way. The Scandinavian playbook from the early nineties was crude but honest: the state walked into the failed banks, nationalised them, wiped out the equity, kept the deposits whole, and re-privatised the cleansed institutions years later at a profit to the taxpayer. The bankers were not bailed out. The banks were. There is an enormous moral and economic difference between those two sentences and the entire subsequent history of the European Union turns on which one you choose. Europe chose neither. Or rather, Europe chose a third option that was effectively a coup conducted in the dark while parliaments were asleep, in which the losses of the criminal lending books in Frankfurt and Paris and Rome were transferred — without consent, without consultation, without anyone really being told what was happening — onto the shoulders of the weakest taxpayers across the union. Greek pensioners. Slovakian metalworkers. Portuguese nurses. Dutch and German workers whose real wages have been flat or falling ever since. Socialism for the bankers and a sustained programme of organised deprivation for everyone else, sold under the language of European solidarity, which is to my ear one of the more obscene linguistic inversions of the postwar period.

The mechanics of how this was administered deserve a moment because the official story — that Europe’s institutions, however imperfect, function through accountable bureaucratic process — collapses on contact with what actually happened. The European Commission, which nobody has ever accused of excessive democratic enthusiasm, was sidelined. Junker as Commission president and Pierre Moscovici as Economics Commissioner were essentially decorative. The actual decisions were taken by a much smaller body, the Eurogroup of finance ministers, and below it by the Eurogroup Working Group, an entity most European citizens have never heard of and whose chair during the critical years was an Austrian official named Thomas Wieser. Wieser ran more of Europe than the Commissioner did. He could do this because he was the only figure trusted simultaneously by Merkel and by Schäuble — those two were at war with each other for years over how brutal the medicine had to be, with Schäuble pushing for harder austerity than even Merkel could stomach — and the equidistance from both made him the actual centre of decision-making power. There was a moment when Moscovici and I had agreed on a joint proposal that would have been workable for both Greece and the eurozone, and five minutes before the Eurogroup convened I watched the Economics Commissioner of the European Union be publicly humiliated by Wieser and by Jeroen Dijsselbloem, until Moscovici was almost in tears. That is the Europe people imagine they live in. Underlings appointed through opaque procedures running the continent, the elected and quasi-elected officials reduced to props.

Last week was that moment, a particular kind of moment when several stories run in parallel creating the right amount of white noise.

Treasury Secretary Bessent stood in front of Congress and admitted, with the kind of carefully bureaucratic language that always means the opposite of what it says, that the Federal Reserve was negotiating dollar swap lines not just with the United Arab Emirates but with “many of our Gulf allies” and “numerous other countries, including some of our Asian allies.” Three days later, on April 28, the UAE state news agency WAM confirmed what had been rumoured all spring: Abu Dhabi is leaving OPEC and OPEC+ effective May 1, ending a membership that began in 1967, four years before the federation itself was formally established. And underneath both announcements, the physical oil market was doing something that the front of the Brent curve has only haltingly acknowledged: dated North Sea Brent has been trading around $130 a barrel, roughly $60 above pre-conflict levels, while the Strait of Hormuz, which used to move twenty million barrels a day of crude and products, has collapsed to under four million. The IEA’s April 2026 Oil Market Report, in language that is unusual for that institution, calls it the largest disruption in history. Tanker traffic through the strait is effectively zero. Nearly two thousand vessels are stranded in the Persian Gulf. VLCC charter rates have run up six times their pre-crisis level. P&I clubs have suspended war risk cover for vessels entering the strait, which is the insurance industry’s polite way of saying that no rational owner sends a ship in there anymore. War risk premiums, when they can be obtained at all, have moved from a quarter-point of vessel value per transit to commercially prohibitive territory. This is not a slowdown. This is a chokehold.

What matters most is that approximately 21 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products pass through the Strait of Hormuz every single day — roughly 21% of global petroleum liquids consumption — moving through a waterway that is, at its narrowest navigable point, about 33 kilometres wide. The world has been running a structurally naked short on physical supply security, and the person who holds the delivery option is currently shooting at tankers.

What the financial press consistently fails to articulate is that the interaction between Washington, Tehran, Riyadh, and Moscow — and the tanker operators navigating between all of them is a game, in the precise technical sense developed by von Neumann and Nash and subsequently interrogated with admirable rigour by Hargreaves Heap and Varoufakis in their Game Theory: A Critical Introduction. Understanding the payoff structure does not guarantee you will predict the outcome. But it is considerably better than reading Reuters headlines and updating your Brent flat price view based on vibes.

There is also a second game running in parallel, which the Western commodity press covers even less competently: the quiet, structural repositioning of Russia’s hydrocarbon supply policy from volume maximisation toward price maximisation — with geopolitical force majeure as the instrument of transition. The two games interact. Understanding how is the point of this article.
